Welcome!

This site contains simple ways students, teachers, and parents can go GREEN!

How the West Milford District is going "green."

The West Milford School District has in fact been testing out different environmentally friendly techniques for years.  These include using green houses, developing recycling systems, and even testing out buses that run off of biodeisel!

Recently, the high school's Environmental Club (the Green Team) and the Board of Education teamed up to swap ideas.  Together they came up with a list of great ideas to tackle during the 2009-2010 school year.

They include:

1) Repairing refrigeration devices in water fountains as well as adding filters - This will make the water at the high school more appealing, and cut down on the number of plastic bottles used.
(Note - the water at all schools is tested regularly.)

2) Repair Green Houses at the high school and Macopin - This will allow for sustainable plants to be grown year round, as well as highten the students' knowledge of environmental sciences.

3) Replace unneccessary grass with sustainable plants - There are many portions of grassed land surrounding the high school and Macopin that are just unneccessary (similar to grass barriers on highways).  Replacing these sections with low maintenance and aesthetically pleasing plants will eliminate mowing.  This will reduce gas consumption as well as carbon dioxide pollution.

4) Restore the importance of recycling - The Green Team is hoping to make sure every school in the district has the proper recepticals in every classroom to make recycling possible.
After all, it is the law.
